At GEP’s teacher training lab school, Lekòl Vizyon Modèn (LVM), thirteen teachers collaborate in teams, develop their own curriculum and co-teach science, mathematics, social studies, Haitian Creole, and art. Teachers at LVM do not use of corporal punishment.

In the fall of 2013, LVM saw its enrollment grow to over 100 students as a result of GEP’s tremendous success last year. In July 2013, students who were taught almost exclusively at LVM in GEP’s educational model took Haiti’s national 6th grade exam. After just three years of school, all 19 students who took the exam passed it, including some who were illiterate when they started at our school.

What makes GEP different is the emphasis on the student being active, discussing with and teaching peers, instead of copying the teacher in the rote memorization style common in most Haitian schools. By using Haitian Creole, the language that students already understand, students can engage more deeply in critical thinking and the scientific method while acquiring literacy skills that make learning other languages easier. GEP’s curriculum emphasizes science and math education for sustainability through hands-on project-based learning and interdisciplinary lessons.
